Thirty children from different schools went along last month (March) to Welbourn Village Hall, Lincolnshire, to celebrate National Science Week which had a specially commissioned series of workshops on the theme of communication.

The event was commissioned and the day organised by Marianne Overton on behalf of the Society of Biology, East Midlands Branch in conjunction with the West Kesteven Wildlife Watch and RSPB Group.

Communication is the theme for National Science Week this year. This event follows a competition, also organised by the Society of Biology, to find the best essay, podcast or poster on the same theme.

This series of workshops last month have been especially created to help children understand the amazing methods of communication in the natural world and how technology has developed to solve the same problems.

The piece is written and directed by Kirsty and Phil Mead of Rhubarb Theatre, together with Science Teacher of teachers, Peter Crowther. Kirsty and Phil Mead of Rhubarb Theatre were also the writers and directors of the Learning Science Through Theatre that was held at the Terry o'Toole Theatre, Lincoln in May last year.

Workshops in the morning gave children a chance to enjoy working together in different groups and explore the information and displays will be created. Each scene is expressed through music and drama and the children even make their own props.

“It is the twelfth year we have run days of science through theatre. The project helps children gain knowledge, skills and confidence and also lead the public debate on live scientific issues. We can learn from them in an engaging way.” Said County Councillor and Lincolnshire Independents Leader, Marianne Overton.

“It is an important event combining strong messages of scientific innovation through theatre. The event follows on from a very successful series of science through theatre events in previous years,” said organiser Marianne Overton. “Children learn a lot in a fun way and gain confidence working in a team together with a common goal. The message of fun, healthy living is very powerful when it comes from the children themselves.”
