It is a disturbing and terrible thought that one of the most magnificent orders in the scale of Nature lives
by unceasing slaughter.
For fierce and insolent beauty, for grace, strength, speed, and audacity, there is
no living thing to excel the animals that feed on flesh.
Long process of refining of wits, of sharpening of natural weapons, has brought these Carnivora - so they
are called - to the highest pitch of efficiency in the capture and killing of other animals.
Day and night the Carnivora keep down the herbivores and are without visible foes, yet have a mysterious check on
over-multiplication.
Check and counter-check are constantly at work to maintain the balance, and as for the terrors of it all-they
hardly exist! But the deer and antelope are born with a sense of caution in the presence of lions, leopards,
and tigers, as emphatic as their instinct to find food and water and mates.
