Although it is called the king of beasts it is really less formidable than the tiger, which has greater strength
of jaws and claws. Yet the lion is sufficiently terrible. As a rule, it does not attack man, but that doesn’t
mean to say that it hasn’t.
Tigers often create havoc in the domestic life of India. Giants of the tiger tribe live in Manchuria, they are huge
of bone and muscle, long of fur, at home in the snow and rigors of a bitter climate; but the Indian tiger is full
lion size-ten feet long and up to 550 pounds in weight. With its ability to live in swamps, in reeds, grasses, in
caves and clefts of rocks, in old buildings and deserted cities, it has a wider range than the lion, and is the
foremost death dealer among Indian animals.
Next to the tigers come the leopards. Indeed, leopards are more to be feared than lions and tigers, for leopards
climb superbly, either to catch a fugitive or to lurk in hiding ready to pounce down on one. In Africa the leopard
is viewed with special abhorrence for this reason. All these great cats are extremely difficult to kill. If dying
animals do not feel the pain inflicted by the big cats, the big cats seem to experience none themselves.
