On Friday 25 February 2011, the Local Government Association (LGA) joint East Midlands and West Midlands Independent Group had their Meeting in the historic City of Lincoln as the Independents start to gear up to be a force to be reckoned with.

Held at the Cathedral Suite, Cathedral Centre, which is the newly converted Centre next to the front main entrance of the Cathedral, in the 13th Century Old Subdeanery, one of Lincoln's oldest dwellings, it proved to be a positive and rewarding day.

After a warm welcome and introduction from Cllr Marianne Overton, East Midlands Regional Chair and Cllr Alan Seldon, West Midlands Regional Chair, Professor Colin Copus, Professor of Politics at De Montfort University gave in the morning (10.45am – 11.45am) an interesting talk on “What are the prospects for Independent Group Councillors in the rapidly changing world of local politics?” that provided plenty of food for thought.

This was then a good lead for Councillor Jonathan Huish LG Group Independent, Group National Lead Member Peer as he provided in the afternoon (13.30 – 15.15) a highly interesting and entertaining talk on “Leading on behalf of Local Communities: reviewing and developing your leadership skills”

To Equip The Independent

The aim is to equip the Independent elected people with the tools to best serve their communities and to not only provide the best service and commitment, but also to plan ahead for the community as a whole. Effectively working as one for that community.

The Independents are striving to work for the good of their communities and what their particular communities need unlike the political parties that heed to the part line and the agenda that the party sets, that more often than not is at odds with the individual areas of this country.
