New Red Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C - Lincolnshire Magazine - LincsMag.com

Have you just received a new red Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C (the vehicle log book)? Registered keepers are advised to destroy their blue V5C and to use the new document in any future dealings with DVLA or the Post Office®.

DVLA had introduced this new red V5C back in August 2010 as it is said to be more secure, more customer friendly and highlights the need for buyers to check the legitimacy of the vehicle presented for sale.

The DVLA then announced earlier in the year that it was accelerating the rollout of the new red V5C, so that from 4th September 2011, when a vehicle is taxed or declared off the road (SORN), DVLA will automatically send the registered keeper a new red V5C if they haven’t already been issued with one.

It was made clear that as part of this process an insert giving customer advice will be included with V5Cs.

Blank Blue V5Cs Stolen

However, owners have been sent the new red V5C even earlier than originally planned as it turns out that there has been a number of blank blue V5Cs stolen. The aim therefore, has been to reduce the risks to motorists of buying a stolen or cloned vehicle.

July 2008

It’s not the first time there has been problems, as back in July 2008 the DVLA warned motorists to check the V5C registration certificate before buying a used vehicle.

Motorists were advised not to purchase the vehicle, and instead report the matter to the police, if the serial number of a V5C registration certificate fell within the following ranges:

BG8229501 to BG9999030
BI2305501 to BI2800000

Motorists are also reminded by the DVLA not to proceed with any purchase if a V5C has no serial number, or looks to have been altered or tampered with, or the vehicle is accompanied by only a part of the V5C registration certificate.

Unique Serial Number

DVLA gives a unique serial number to all registration certificates issued but in the 2008 incident it said that it was due to a technical issue in the printing process, the above serial numbers have not, and will not be issued.

Prospective buyers are urged to check the serial number that appears at the top right hand corner of the registration certificate before buying a used vehicle. Further advice on buying and selling vehicles is available on the DVLA website.

REMEMBER

When you receive your new red V5C, you are advised to destroy the blue V5C.
