I know some might say that I am biased due to the DVDs (this is a 4 DVD collection) being about the Royal Air Force, but when I say that this a must have DVD collection for anyone who enjoys the history of the Royal Air Force, especially those interested in the Cold War period of the 1960s, I am not exaggerating!

These DVDs are entertaining with the films on the whole aiming at a wider audience and being well narrated and so can be appreciated by not just the aviation enthusiast.

Four Great Discs

Royal Air Force in the 1960s - Lincolnshire Magazine - LincsMag.com

Just watching Disc 1 was fantastic to see wonderful film of the Lightning flying in the film Streaked Lightning (1960, 5 mins) ... the Lightning features well, naturally enough being a 1960s aircraft, throughout the DVD collection. Then a treat for all Vulcan fans, showing also the Lincolnshire connection to this great aircraft, comes in the film Delta 8-3 : The Vulcan (1960, 27 mins) with RAF Waddington and the last film on Disc 1 being No Claims Bonus (1961, 5 mins) with Vulcans from RAF Scampton.

Some of the films surprised me at how interesting they turned out to be, for example when I looked at what was on Disc 2, I saw The Multi-Seat `MS 26' Dinghy (1963, 22 mins) and thought how can they do a 22 minute programme on just a Dinghy? Well at the end of an enjoyable and enlightening 22 minutes I could see how and it also was very clever and valuable information to know, especially for people that travel often, watch it and you will see what I mean.

Also on Disc 2 was The Fighter-Bomber Electronic Warfare Battle (1963, 21 mins), this film may be considered a little technical and boring by some, but worth the watch as you can now see the fighter pilot in a new light and appreciate the vast skill and knowledge of these pilots ... you can see that it’s not just a case of jumping in a fighter aircraft and flying it around at fast speed. This film couples well with Streaked Lightning on Disc 1.

Flight - An Anthology (1964, 13 mins) on Disc 3 gives some great flying film and once more a delight for Lightning fans. Ever wanted to know how an ejection seat works? Escape From an Aircraft in Flight (1965, 21 mins) shows you.

Disc 4 had my father’s branch of the service in Royal Air Force Police (1967, 8 mins) and from my time in Malta I found Malta - Shackleton (1969, 8 mins) very interesting, especially in appreciating what a fantastic aircraft the Shackleton was.

I could go on and on but really it’s best if you just get the DVDs and enjoy the films for yourself as you see a slice of RAF history in all its glory.

Summing Up

5 Star Rating - Lincolnshire Magazine - LincsMag.com A must have DVD collection for any RAF and Aviation enthusiast.
