Looking After Cats - Page 5
Cats and Grooming!
Remember that every cat is improved both in health and appearance by being groomed every day.
It must be remembered that the cat sheds its coat in the spring and in the autumn, and at those
times the coat is full of loose hairs, just remember that when you clothing that does not match
the color of your cat … when it rubs against you, you will know what I mean.
NOTE: the cat's
cleaning instrument, is his tongue and if the cat is not brushed every day he may get a lot of
loose hair in his mouth when licking his coat, in which case the cat cannot avoid swallowing
some of the loose hair, and sadly it’s not unknown for a cat to die through swallowing pellets
of its own hair. A cat living in a state of Nature would take an emetic (some coarse grass) and
so get rid of those pellets of hair, but a town cat is not able to get Nature's remedy when he
is ill.
The cat is all the better for being combed as well as being brushed; this applies specially
to longhaired cats. If their coats are allowed at any time to become matted, they become very
dirty and may become the home for a colony of fleas. Cats have a special flea of their own … well
they would wouldn’t they, not any flea would do.
The best way to treat a cat afflicted with fleas is to dust a good insect powder into its coat.
They should then be wrapped up for a few minutes in a piece of cloth; naturally, the head must
be outside. The coat should then be combed with a very fine comb, when the fleas can easily be
removed and the fleas dropped into boiling water or disposed of as your vet suggests. There are
different ways of course of treating fleas to day so it is always worthwhile visiting the local pet
store or your vet to get up to date advice.
